WASHINGTON (AP) - The Smithsonian Institution reported 30.2 million visits were made to its museums last year, a 7 percent increase fueled by the addition of two sites.

The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/2iQWwBq) that the National Museum of African American History and Culture welcomed 733,000 to its galleries in the 14 weeks it was open in 2016. The Renwick Gallery, a part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum that reopened in November 2015, attracted large crowds in the first half of the year. Altogether, it had 764,000 visitors, compared to 164,000 in 2015.

The total attendance number was the largest since 2012, when the Smithsonian reported 30.3 million visits.
