AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Top legislative leaders say exactly when Republican Gov. Paul LePage will present his two-year budget proposal remains unclear.
LePage is set to unveil a budget that he says will reduce spending and cut taxes for the state’s highest earners. His deadline is just before midnight.
Typically, LePage presents his proposal to legislative leaders and then the media. But top lawmakers said midday Friday they knew no details about a briefing for lawmakers.
LePage has said potentially major cuts are needed to mitigate the impact of an income surtax and minimum wage hike.
LePage wants to lower Maine’s top income tax rate of 7.15 percent. Voters approved an additional three percent tax on individual incomes over $200,000, which would give Maine one of the highest tax rates on high earners nationwide.
