China’s state-run Xinhua news agency blasted President-elect Donald Trump in a recent editorial for hinting foreign policy changes in less than 140 characters, The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.
“This week, China’s state media made clear that they are growing weary of the provocative missives, essentially telling Trump enough with the Twitter already,” said THR, going on to quote from the commentary.
“Twitter shouldn’t become an instrument of foreign policy,” Xinhua said, belittling the president-elect by counseling that “diplomacy isn’t a child’s game, and even less is it like doing business deals,” THR reported.
For its part, the communist nation blocks its citizens from using Twitter and heavily polices a Chinese knockoff of the service named Weibo. Even so, clever users have often used coded phrases to discuss taboo topics to skirt around government censorship, the United Kingdom’s Independent newspaper reported in August 2015.
