WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts State Police trooper who crashed his vintage Corvette and seriously injured his passenger has avoided jail time.

The Eagle-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2iEZqJ1 ) reports that 38-year-old Dale Jenkins was sentenced Wednesday to three months in jail, but the entire sentence was suspended for two years of probation. He was also sentenced to 250 hours of community service.

He was convicted in November of negligent operation in connection with the May 2014 off-duty crash in North Andover.

Jenkins had been drinking at his home shortly before the crash but denied being impaired. He was not convicted of drunken driving.

He says he swerved to avoid hitting a deer and lost control of his 1965 Corvette.

His passenger, a Burlington firefighter, suffered serious injuries including a partial internal decapitation, a normally fatal neck injury.
