MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Phil Scott says the key to economic opportunity in Vermont is through the state’s schools and the state must rethink its entire education system.
In his inaugural address, Scott, a Republican, said Vermont spends about $19,000 a year for each student in kindergarten through high school, one of the highest amounts in the country, but Vermont is not an education destination for young families.
He says if Vermonters want an education system that draws young families, “we can’t be paralyzed by fear of change, and we have been.”
He says investment in early education is a proven approach to reducing special education and health care costs
He challenged school administrators to think about ways to do things better.
He also challenged teachers to teach the child, not the test.
