A D.C. restaurant recently commissioned an artist to make a whimsical portrait of George Washington depicted as a modern-day hipster, complete with man bun.
The oil painting by local artist Nathan Loda depicts a young Washington raising a glass of whiskey, with sunglasses tucked into a vest pocket, Washingtonian magazine reported Thursday.
“If George Washington was here today, if he was hipster, cool, and this was his place, and he was presiding over the dining room, what would he look like?” Farmers & Distillers co-owner Dan Simons said of the concept of the painting, Washingtonian reported.
The painting is to hang in the dining room of the Chinatown establishment, the newest restaurant by the D.C.-based Farmers Restaurant Group.
While it’s debatable the father of our country would be caught dead in a man bun, he was both a farmer and a distiller, although he took up the latter pursuit just a few years before he died.
“In 1799, the year of Washington’s death, his distillery produced nearly 11,000 gallons, making it the largest whiskey distillery in America at the time,” according to MountVernon.org.
