DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - Officials in Davenport are moving closing to allowing people to keep chickens in the city.

The Quad-City Times reports (https://bit.ly/2hUDdCF ) the City Council discussed a proposed ordinance Wednesday that would allow residents to keep up to six chickens in residential areas.

People would need to pay $25 for a permit and take a training course about handling chickens.

Officials say the proposed Davenport ordinance was similar to a law approved in Cedar Rapids.

The council will take up the matter again later before possible approval next month.
