WASHINGTON (AP) - Leaders of the largest union representing Metro workers are offering their own ideas about how to fix the struggling transit system.

Leaders of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 will host a panel discussion with safety and transit experts on Wednesday.

The union says the event “will expose the mismanagement” at Metro, where general manager Paul Wiedefeld has sometimes clashed with the union during his year on the job. Last month, Wiedefeld fired four track inspectors and two supervisors for falsifying maintenance records after an investigation into a derailment. He also said nearly half of the system’s inspectors were facing some form of discipline.

The union questioned the allegation that the workers had falsified reports, saying a lack of training may have been to blame.
