NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL’s finance and stadium committees will meet in New York next Wednesday to discuss the potential relocation of the Chargers from San Diego to Los Angeles.
Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos has indicated he will move the team into the $2.6 billion stadium being built by Rams owner Stan Kroenke and scheduled to open for the start of the 2019 season. Spanos has until Jan. 15 to exercise his option to do so, which would give Los Angeles two franchises next season.
The two committees have been busy lately, first with the Rams’ move from St. Louis for the 2016 season, and then with the Chargers’ and Raiders’ situations. Oakland owner Mark Davis is planning a move to Las Vegas, where $750 million in taxpayer money has been committed for a $1.9 billion facility that would open in 2019 or 2020.
A Chargers-written ballot measure was soundly defeated Nov. 8. It sought $1.15 billion in increased hotel occupancy taxes to help fund a new downtown stadium and convention center annex.
It’s believed that Spanos could be seeking more money from the NFL to help him stay in San Diego. It appears that money is needed to bridge the gap between money already available from the league and the team, and public contribution from the city, county and San Diego State.
Spanos met late last month with those entities. However, none of the entities have confirmed a dollar mount they are willing to contribute to a stadium.
“The county participated in one meeting with the Chargers in December where regional options for financing a new stadium were discussed,” Supervisor Ron Roberts said. “At this point, we are waiting to hear back from the NFL and Chargers before talks can continue.”
San Diego State declined comment and a spokesman for Mayor Kevin Faulconer didn’t return an email asking for specifics of a city offer.
The NFL’s finance committee members are chairman Bob McNair of Houston, Arthur Blank of Atlanta, Joel Glazer of Tampa Bay, Clark Hunt of Kansas City, Jim Irsay of Indianapolis,
Shahid Khan of Jacksonville, Robert Kraft of New England and Jeffrey Lurie of Philadelphia.
Members of the stadium committee are chairman Art Rooney of Pittsburgh, Michael Bidwill of Arizona, Woody Johnson of New York Jets, Stephen Jones of Dallas, George H. McCaskey of Chicago and Jed York of San Francisco.
