NASHUA, N.H. (AP) - Authorities say the city of Nashua, New Hampshire, averaged a drug overdose a day in 2016 and more than doubled the number of fatal overdoses from 2015.

According to numbers released by Nashua’s American Medical Response ambulance service, there were 40 fatal overdoses in Nashua in 2016, topping the 19 opioid-related deaths in 2015.

The Telegraph of Nashua reports (https://bit.ly/2hQGSl6) the service says 365 people were treated for an opioid-related overdose in 2016. That number was 250 in 2015.

However, Mayor Jim Donchess says the numbers may be showing signs of hope. In December, there were 23 overdoses, including three fatalities - the lowest monthly total since August 2015. There also have been about 50 participants in Safe Stations, a program allowing people addicted to drugs to go to a fire station and get help. That started in November.
