ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say the number of slayings that occurred in Rochester last year rose by 16 percent in comparison to 2015.
The Rochester Police Department says Tuesday there were 42 homicides in the city in 2016, compared to 36 in 2015. Investigators found no pattern to explain the rise in violence.
The total supplied by police was in response to a Democrat & Chronicle report (https://on.rocne.ws/2hLCHf8 ) that said there were 43 homicides last year.
The increase in 2016 comes at a time when violent crimes have been trending downward at a steady pace nationwide.
Despite the rise in slayings, last year’s numbers show that Rochester’s overall crime rate was at a 25-year low.
The newspaper reported the homicide figures were based on information provided by police and were subject to change.
