IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The man who disrupted a flag-burning protest in Iowa City with a fire extinguisher last week won’t lose his job.
FedEx said Saturday in a statement that Matt Uhrin would continue working as a driver.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (https://icp-c.com/2kgTrv8 ) pictures and video of Uhrin rescuing a U.S. flag Thursday spread quickly on the internet, and he was wearing his FedEx uniform at the time.
Some, including prominent conservative commentators, praised Uhrin’s actions, but others criticized him. Uhrin has declined the newspaper’s request for comment.
He used his extinguisher to retrieve one flag from the protesters and walk away. But he wasn’t successful in stopping the protesters from burning a second flag amid some pushing and shoving.
“FedEx has reviewed the matter in Iowa City involving our driver Matt Uhrin,” the company said in a statement. “Mr. Uhrin remains a FedEx Express employee, and we have no plans to change his status.”
Two of the protesters were ticketed for failing to obtain a permit for an open burn in violation of city rules. That misdemeanor offense is punishable by a fine up to $625 or up to 30 days in jail.
