CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - Police in Central Falls have rescued seven people, including a 3-year-old boy, after racing into a burning building.

The Providence Journal reports that a police officer was patrolling the city’s north end at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when she noticed the house on fire.

Officer Yomaira Rodriguez summoned two other officers and they entered the building at 137 Earle Street. The three were able to rescue those inside the building, who were sleeping at the time.

Investigators believe four individuals on the second floor of the building were just moments away from being overcome by carbon monoxide. The 3-year-old boy and his parents were asleep on the first floor.

Major Daniel Barzykowski said police believe the fire may have been set deliberately and are continuing to investigate.
