FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) - Framingham is allowing voters to decide whether the town should officially become a city.

The Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/2jvOJZl ) the town’s Board of Selectmen voted this week to put the issue on the ballot on April 4.

A commission consisting of nine members spent the last 10 months examining various forms of government. The group suggested that Framingham become a city with a strong, full-time mayor and 11 city councilors.

The mayor would serve a four-year term and make appointments to boards, committees, commissions and officers.

The commission recommended that the city council consist of nine district members serving two-year terms and two at-large members serving four-year terms. The council would have to approve the mayor’s appointments.

The town is the 14th largest community in the state.
