BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A North Dakota man has to pay restitution of $3,000 and a $500 fine after federal prosecutors say he illegally killed two elk in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
U.S. Attorney Christopher Myers says 49-year-old Mark Hale of Manville was sentenced for violating the U.S. Lacey Act, by transporting an illegally taken elk after killing the animal within park boundaries.
The government says Hale illegally shot a bull elk inside the park north of Medora on Sept. 7, 2016. Hale was hunting along the park fence when he shot an elk which had jumped into the park. Hale then saw a larger trophy elk within the park and shot through the fence, killing that elk as well.
Hale returned with a game cart and tried to retrieve only the trophy elk.
