PHOENIX (AP) - Five former Arizona child welfare workers fired amid an agency scandal want the Arizona Supreme Court to revive their wrongful dismissal lawsuit.
The women filed their appeal with the high court earlier this week. The filing comes a month after the Arizona Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court’s decision to dismiss their suit.
The five senior Child Protective Services workers were fired months after the November 2013 discovery that thousands of child abuse hotline calls were labeled as not worthy of being investigated. CPS itself was then shuttered and a new Department of Child Safety created.
The workers argued they were illegally fired for political reasons and not because they failed at their jobs.
The appeals court found they were at-will employees who were not protected by state law.
