CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Sponsors trying to bring Major League Soccer to Charlotte are reviewing options after city council refused to vote on spending $44 million on a stadium.

Speedway Motorsports executive Mike Burch said Thursday the company is trying to determine how and whether to proceed with the effort.

Mecklenburg County Council voted 5-4 Thursday to spend $44 million toward construction of a $175 million soccer stadium in Charlotte. The county council also voted to loan Speedway Motorsports $75 million, to be repaid over 25 years.

Moments later, city council canceled plans to vote Friday on the $44 million.

Major League Soccer has told cities interested to submit plans by Jan. 31.

Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts said the city would consider contributing if officials had more time to study the proposal.
