NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Salve Regina University in Newport has opened a new digital forensics lab that will offer students the chance to train for cybersecurity jobs.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1hsJ3Zv ) the university unveiled the new lab Wednesday night. It operates independently from the school’s computer network to allow for instruction including simulating malware and other cyberattacks.

The lab is using forensics hardware and software provided by the Israeli company Cellebrite, which helped hack into the cellphone of one of two people involved in the 2015 terror attack in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 people and injured 22 others.

Salve Regina also is buying machines that can sift through multiple hard drivers simultaneously.

The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in administration of justice and homeland security.
