Evan McMullin, an independent conservative presidential candidate and frequent critic of President Trump, is launching a new outside advocacy group along with Mindy Finn, his running mate.

The group, “Stand Up Republic,” “will build and organize a grassroots movement in defense of liberty, equality, and truth in America,” according to its website.

“Our priorities will be to uphold the Constitution and defend the democratic norms and institutions upon which the protection of our basic rights depend,” the site says.

A video on the site includes excerpts of speeches from former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, including Mr. Reagan’s line that “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”

Mr. McMullin, a former CIA operative, launched his presidential bid in August 2016. He ended up securing slightly more than 700,000 votes, or less than 1 percent, and finished behind Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

He has continued to criticize Mr. Trump after the election, notably on the Trump administration’s treatment of the press and on issues related to Russian interference in the campaign.
