SPRINGVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has blown up another longstanding structure in upstate New York.
The Democrat on Wednesday pushed the plunger to set off the explosion that demolished the 85-year-old bridge carrying Route 213 over Rondout Creek in the Ulster County town of Marbletown. The blast dropped the 260-foot-long span’s steel superstructure a short distance into the waterway.
A new bridge to be built at the same spot is expected to open by June 30.
In June, Cuomo was among the officials to press the plunger setting off controlled explosions that demolished a 50-year-old bridge spanning the Zoar Valley Gorge south of Buffalo.
A year ago this month he helped set off the blast that imploded the nearly 40-year-old grandstand at the New York state fairgrounds outside Syracuse.
