BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A group piecing together a sprawling Montana wildlife preserve has named author and historian David McCullough as the first recipient of a prize named after filmmaker Ken Burns.

The American Prairie Reserve said Tuesday that McCullough was awarded the Ken Burns American Heritage Prize for his work to advance the public’s understanding of American history.

McCullough is the author of numerous books including “John Adams,” ’’Truman” and “1776.”

The American Prairie Reserve is attempting to piece together the largest nature reserve in the United States on 3.5 million acres of public and private lands in north-central Montana.

Burns is a reserve supporter and the producer of numerous PBS series including “The Civil War” and “Baseball.”
