MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s 2018 campaign manager says she started this year with more than $1 million in the bank.

Baldwin’s campaign released the figure in a memo Monday. No Republican has officially announced their plans to challenge Baldwin in 2018, but several are considering it.

Baldwin campaign manager Scott Spector says she raised $1.8 million last year.

The state Republican Party criticized Baldwin on Monday for planning a Saturday fundraiser described as a “2017 Eau Claire campaign kick-off.”

Wisconsin Republican Party spokesman Alec Zimmerman says that amounts to Baldwin starting her re-election campaign “behind closed doors.” The fundraiser is at the home of Democratic state Rep. Dana Wachs.

Spector says Baldwin “is kicking off the year with these events, not our campaign.” Spector says there will be official campaign kickoff events later.
