Toledo will join suburbs to look at regional water system

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The city of Toledo is joining with neighboring suburbs in northwestern Ohio to look at creating a regional water system.

Toledo’s city council recently approved a resolution supporting the idea. At least eight other suburbs and counties are on board.

The Blade (https://bit.ly/2ijoTam ) newspaper reports Toledo residents might face higher rates under a regional system.

But the city also could face losing its suburban water customers if it goes against taking part in a regional system.

Toledo’s mayor supports the idea and says it would give the city a backup to keep its water supply safe.

The city gets all of its water from Lake Erie and was forced to warn people that it was undrinkable for three days in 2014 because of algae-produced toxins in the lake.
