GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Police officers and firefighters in Greenwood will soon receive slightly larger paychecks.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/2iGOVpX ) that the City Council has approved an extra $1 an hour for the public safety workers. The raise does not include Fire Chief Marcus Banks or Police Chief Ray Moore.

The raise will begin showing up in employees’ checks in late January. Before this, the entry-level pay for a firefighter was $8.26 an hour.

The chiefs say other cities have been luring away their officers and firefighters by offering higher pay.

Mayor Carolyn McAdams says she hopes the council can approve across-the-board pay raises for other city employees later this year or in 2018.
