WASHINGTON (AP) - The outgoing secretary of transportation says Metro riders may encounter as many problems as ever, but the system has made dramatic improvements.
The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/2j3ns07 ) reports that Anthony Foxx told reporters Thursday that Metro is “actually better today than it was a year ago.”
Foxx says for many years issues weren’t being exposed, so the fact that they are being exposed now is “an advancement.”
He says the presence of federal inspectors on tracks has made the system safer, and he believes that General Manager Paul Wiedefeld “wants to bring about the culture changes that the system needs.”
Foxx also expressed frustration about the fact that Maryland and Virginia have not approved an independent safety oversight organization that assumes some of those responsibilities from the Federal Transit Administration.
