HOUSTON (AP) - A severe storm system moving through the state has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning for the city of Houston.

The weather service on Monday urged residents to seek shelter in interior rooms with no windows and wait for the storm to pass.

Heavy rains fell in the greater Houston region and the system also brought strong winds and hail.

Houston flights were grounded for a time, resulting in delays through the morning.

Heavy rains also fell early Monday in many other parts of Texas, with some areas of Central Texas receiving more than an inch of rainfall and many other places at least a half-inch.
