ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority is looking to refurbish some of its aging commuter buses.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (https://on-ajc.com/2iEQh4u) GRTA Executive Director Chris Tomlinson told a legislative subcommittee Tuesday that 95 of the 166 coaches in its fleet are at least 10 years old and near the end of their 12-year life span.
The agency has begun rehabbing 30 of the buses. They’ll get new engines, transmissions and other major components, plus an exterior and interior remodel, Wi-Fi, cameras and new lighting.
Tomlinson says it costs less than half the price of buying a new bus to refurbish one and extend its life by four years. The agency hopes to rehab 158 buses by 2021.
The GRTA provides express bus service on 25 routes in 12 counties.
