WILTON MANORS, Fla. (AP) - State regulators are taking aim at a South Florida animal rescue organization accused of misusing charitable funds.
News outlets report the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says it appears 100+ Abandoned Dogs of the Everglades used more than $98,000 in donations for “personal expenses,” including purchases at TJ Maxx, Best Buy and other stores as well as a vacation to Key West.
The group’s attorney, Jeffrey Neiman, says the money was used to buy items such as dog beds, blankets and leashes. Neiman says the Key West trip was a failed rescue.
The state also says the group’s president, Amy Roman, used $30,000 from her rescue to buy a BMW SUV. Roman says it was a loan that was paid back, and approved by her board of directors.
