As he prepares to leave office, the nation’s first black president said voters will someday elect a woman president and a greater diversity of leaders.

“If we keep opening up opportunity, we’re going to have a woman president, a Latino president, a Jewish president, a Hindu president,” President Obama said at his final news conference. “I suspect we’ll have a whole bunch of mixed up presidents. I think we’re going to see people of merit rise up from every race … that’s America’s strength.”

Hillary Clinton was the first female major-party nominee for president but lost the election to Republican Donald Trump, who takes the oath of office on Friday.
