BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - A 16-year-old Massachusetts boy has pleaded not guilty to fatally stabbing his mother’s ex-husband.

The Cape Cod Times (https://bit.ly/2iBA67Q ) reports that Cole Martin was sent for a competency evaluation after his arraignment Tuesday in Barnstable District Court on murder and other charges.

Martin is being tried in adult court because of the seriousness of the charges.

Prosecutors say Martin stabbed James Dean multiple times in the chest at a Yarmouth motel on Jan. 6.

Martin and his mother live in Harwich, but his mother had gone to the motel to visit her ex-husband.

The teen’s attorney, Drew Segadelli, says Dean had a history of abusing the boy and his mother.
