NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) - Alan White, a longtime editor of The Eagle-Tribune newspaper in North Andover, Massachusetts, died Wednesday at age 68.
The Eagle-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2jAYF4j ) reported that White was found dead in his home on Plum Island. The cause of his death was not immediately known.
“Al was the epitome of a committed journalist who cared deeply about the communities that he covered. He was intensely knowledgeable about ethics, fair reporting standards, accurate storytelling,” said Karen Andreas, publisher of The Eagle-Tribune and North of Boston Media Group, who worked with White for nearly 15 years. “We have a void in our newsroom, and in our region, that will be tough to replace. We’ll miss him dearly as a colleague, mentor and friend.”
White was a native of Worcester and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross. Shortly after graduation, he began his 43-year career at The Eagle-Tribune, where he held various newsroom positions. He served as executive editor from 2009 until his passing. The newspaper said White’s work as an editor contributed to one of the paper’s two Pulitzer Prizes, and led to other awards and honors.
Eagle-Tribune Managing Editor Tracey Rauhm, who also worked with White for 15 years, said he knew the region well.
“His institutional knowledge was more comprehensive than any other resource available to us at The Eagle-Tribune,” Rauh said. “He truly was the consummate newsman and it was with heavy hearts we carried on today amid the sad news of his passing.”
Colleagues called White an ideal mentor to young reporters and writers and praised his skills as an editor.
And while he loved the newspaper businesses, colleagues said he also loved to fish and was active in Plum Island community affairs.
White leaves behind five brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements have not yet been set.
