PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) - More bus routes, park-and-ride lots and private partnerships with Uber-like services are among the suggestions for better public transportation services in Sarpy County.
The suggestions are included in a study looking at the lack of public transportation options in Nebraska’s fastest-growing county, the Omaha World-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2jjSH5C ).
The three decades’ worth of public transportation upgrades wouldn’t come cheap: The first 10 years of recommendations alone cost almost $60 million in combined operating and capital costs.
The recommendations are the result of a yearlong study from the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency. The agency already has published two reports on the topic, and a final report with information from all three earlier reports will be completed in the coming months.
Other suggestions to alleviate the transportation issues include expanding Route 97 to and from downtown Gretna, as well as expanding Route 93 to and from Highway 370.
Metro transit currently has few routes from cities in Sarpy County to downtown Omaha, and a few of the county’s cities offer on-demand ride services to senior citizens and residents with disabilities. Some plans call for a combination of fixed bus routes and new and expanded express routes to increase connections between Omaha and Sarpy County.
