MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - A suspect has been arrested on murder charges in connection with the death of a Mount Vernon eighth-grader who was killed by a stray bullet while riding home from basketball practice.

Twenty-one-year-old David Hardy also faces criminal possession of a weapon charges following a court appearance Tuesday.

Prosecutors say Hardy was aiming for another person when he fired multiple times, striking 13-year-old Shamoya McKenzie in the head as she sat in the passenger seat of a car in Mount Vernon on Dec. 31.

Hardy is being held at Westchester County Jail pending further hearings.

Attorney Peter St. George Davis said Hardy was innocent until proven guilty.

McKenzie played on the varsity basketball team at Mount Vernon High School. Her mother says her daughter dreamed of playing for the WNBA.
