ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A 62-year-old Rochester man has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for kidnapping a 74-year-old woman after a bungled robbery attempt and pushing her into the Genesee River.

Franklin Leonard was convicted last month of kidnapping, robbery and menacing for a series of crimes that ended with the victim being rescued from the river in Rochester. He was sentenced on Tuesday.

Authorities say Leonard tried to rob a realtors’ office in suburban Gates at gunpoint in October 2015, then fled to a nearby home. He encountered a woman in her driveway, forced her into her car and drove into Rochester. There, he stole her belongings and pushed her into the Genesee.

She was rescued by passers-by and firefighters.
