WASHINGTON (AP) - At least one Republican senator won’t be dusting off her dancing slippers for President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural balls.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine still is recovering from a broken ankle she suffered in a fall on ice outside her home in Bangor last month. Her office says she has a plate and eight screws in her ankle, and she’s receiving physical therapy.
The injury won’t prevent her from attending the inauguration, but it’s putting the kibosh on inaugural balls, spokeswoman Annie Clark said.
The senator can walk with crutches, but she’s been using a motorized scooter to get around the Capitol complex in recent days, Clark said.
“Her injury hasn’t kept her from her usual busy schedule. It takes Sen. Collins a lot of extra time when she is using her crutches, but she has been zooming around the Capitol in a power scooter, which she uses like a go-cart to quickly get to the Senate floor,” Clark said.
There’s no timetable for the injury to fully heal, but Collins doesn’t plan to miss any votes.
“She hasn’t missed a vote yet - 6,261 and counting,” Clark said.
