LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles dockworker convicted of bilking a union health care plan has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/2jkiPNw ) that 53-year-old David Gomez of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 13 was sentenced last week to 41 months in prison. Gomez was also ordered to pay $201,000 in restitution.

Federal prosecutors say Gomez and a fellow union member cheated the insurance plan out of more than $200,000 by opening medical and chiropractic clinics and paying other union members incentives to visit those clinics.

The health care plan is run by the union and shipping trade group Pacific Maritime Association.
