President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office Friday using the Bible used at the inaugural ceremonies of President Abraham Lincoln and President Obama, as well as his own childhood Bible, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Tuesday.
“In his first inaugural address, President Lincoln appealed to the ‘better angels of our nature,’” said Tom Barrack, who chairs the inaugural committee. “As he takes the same oath of office 156 years later, President-elect Trump is humbled to place his hand on Bibles that hold special meaning both to his family and to our country.”
The Lincoln Bible, purchased for Mr. Lincoln’s first inaugural, is part of the Library of Congress’s collections and was also used at Mr. Obama’s inauguration ceremonies in 2009 and 2013.
Mr. Trump’s mother presented him with his Bible when he finished Sunday Church Primary School at First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, New York, in 1955. It is a revised standard version published in 1953, and the inside cover is signed by church officials and inscribed with Mr. Trump’s name and details about when he first received it.
