Alexandria, Va. names Michael L. Brown as city’s new police chief

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — An Alexandria resident with nearly four decades of law enforcement, safety and public policy experience will serve as the Washington suburb’s new police chief.

Alexandria’s city manager announced the appointment of Michael L. Brown as the police chief on Monday.

According to a city statement , Brown started as a police officer in Los Angeles in 1977 and rose through the ranks of the California Highway Patrol, eventually serving as its commissioner from 2004 to 2008. He then served as the California deputy secretary for public safety and worked for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

He replaces David Huchler, who has served as the acting police chief since Earl Cook’s retirement in October.

The city says Brown has lived in Alexandria since 2010 with his wife, an Alexandria sheriff’s deputy.
