Toby Keith isn’t backing down from his decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inaugural welcome concert this week.
The country music star told Entertainment Weekly that he’s performed several concerts for U.S. presidents and doesn’t plan to stop now just because he’s angered some fans.
“I don’t apologize for performing for our country or military,” Mr. Keith said in a statement. “I performed at events for previous presidents [George W.] Bush and [Barack] Obama and over 200 shows in Iraq and Afghanistan for the USO.”
Mr. Keith will be joined by 3 Doors Down, Lee Greenwood, The Piano Guys, and the Frontmen of Country for the “Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” at the Lincoln Memorial on Jan. 19, one day before the inauguration.
Mr. Trump’s search for talent to perform at the inauguration has been very public, with several prominent entertainers coming out and saying they would not participate due to the president-elect’s policies.
Broadway star Jennifer Holliday, who was originally announced as part of the Jan. 19 lineup, backed out Saturday after facing pressure from the LGBT community.
The Radio City Rockettes, Talladega Marching Tornadoes, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Jackie Evancho have also seen their share of controversy since agreeing to perform at the Jan. 20 inauguration.
