ATLANTA (AP) - A Gwinnett County commissioner called U.S. Rep. John Lewis a “racist pig” in a social media post, but later said it was an overreaction to the civil rights leader’s criticisms of President-elect Donald Trump.

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution (https://on-ajc.com/2jq31LX ) reports that Gwinnett County Commissioner Tommy Hunter, a Republican, posted on social media Saturday that “John Lewis is a racist pig.” Hunter said that criticisms of Trump were coming from “Demonrats.”

Lewis had said he didn’t view Trump as a legitimate president.

Hunter’s post was later taken down. Hunter told the newspaper that his comments were probably an “overreaction out of aggravation.”

Gwinnett County Democratic Party Chairman Gabe Okoye said the comments were disgraceful and Hunter should resign.

Lewis was beaten and had his skull fractured by Alabama troopers while marching for voting rights in 1965.
