MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - Police have made an arrest in the death of a Mount Vernon eighth-grader who was killed by a stray bullet while riding home from basketball practice.

The Journal News (https://lohud.us/2jROMMc ) reports a city spokeswoman announced the arrest on Monday but said further details would not be provided until Tuesday.

Thirteen-year-old Shamoya McKenzie was a passenger in a car when she was shot in the head in Mount Vernon on Dec. 31.

Shamoya’s mother says her daughter dreamed of attending the University of Connecticut and playing for the WNBA. She already was playing junior varsity basketball with Mount Vernon High School’s Lady Knights.
