FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) - The National Security Agency’s internal watchdog has found more than 100 cases in five years in which civilian employees and contractors falsely claimed to have been at work.
Details about the cases were released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Baltimore Sun (https://bsun.md/2iuZO9g ). An NSA spokesman says the incidents cost the agency almost $3.5 million, though about 80 percent of the money lost to the fraud has been recovered.
Investigators in the agency’s inspector general’s office substantiated allegations in 44 “civilian time and attendance cases” and 68 “contractor labor mischarging cases,” according to the records.
In some cases, the newspaper reported, the workers lied about working hundreds of hours before they were caught.
