The interim chair of the Democratic National Committee denounced President-elect Donald Trump’s critique of Rep. John Lewis as all talk no action.
Speaking at a DNC “Future Forum” in Phoenix, Donna Brazile said that Mr. Lewis, a civil-rights icon, has “never stopped marching for justice and equality for all people.”
“John Lewis is our hero,” Ms. Brazile said. “We denounce these remarks, not only on Congressman John Lewis, but on the good people of Atlanta.”
The flap between Mr. Lewis and Mr. Trump started after the Georgia Democrat said he is going to skip the Republican’s Jan. 20 inauguration.
“I don’t see Trump as a legitimate president,” Mr. Lewis said in an interview set to air Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Mr. Trump countered on Twitter Saturday morning.
“Congressman John Lewih should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results,” Mr. Trump said. “All talk, talk, talk - no action or results. Sad!”
Mr. Lewis was badly beaten in 1965 when he participated in the March from Selma to Montgomery. He suffered a broken skull in what has become known as “Bloody Sunday.”
