NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that the city developed or preserved nearly 22,000 affordable housing units in 2016 - the highest total in more than 25 years.
The Democrat has pledged to either build or save 200,000 apartments over the course of 10 years. City statistics show that the mayor is up to 62,506 so far.
Approximately 33 percent of the apartments are new, just shy of the 40 percent target in the city’s housing plan. Monthly rents for apartments in the plan range from less than $600 for low income families to as much as $3,360.
De Blasio on Thursday said his administration is obligated to ensure that both working-class residents and middle-class citizens alike can live and stay in New York City.
