Sen. Lindsey Graham gave a lighthearted apology to fellow Republican Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday for joking about his murder during the presidential primary.
Mr. Graham, whose presidential campaign flamed out early on, made the joke about Mr. Cruz in February. “If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,” he said at the time.
The duo, who clashed often during the campaign season, appeared to set aside their differences Thursday during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“The love is everywhere,” Mr. Graham said, giving two thumbs up.
“I want to apologize to Ted for saying he should be killed on the Senate floor,” he said before turning to Mr. Cruz. “I’m sorry, Ted.”
“At least we’re not on the Senate floor now,” Mr. Cruz quipped.
The senators have united to introduce legislation that would end all U.S. taxpayer funding to the U.N. unless it repeals a resolution passed last month condemning Israeli settlements. President Obama abstained from the vote, breaking with long-standing U.S. tradition of vetoing such resolutions.
Mr. Cruz said he’s optimistic the bill will pass the Republican-led Congress.
“We can give speeches, we can pass resolutions and the UN is going to ignore what we have to say,” he told MSNBC. “But if you cut off their money, that gets their attention, and I think we’ve got real prospects of seeing this thing move through Congress and actually turning this thing around.”
