MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Glendale Mayor Bryan Kennedy says he’ll challenge state Democratic Party Chairwoman Martha Laning for her leadership post at the party’s June convention.

Laning is running again despite the party’s dismal Election Day performance. Donald Trump became the first Republican presidential candidate to win Wisconsin since 1984, Russ Feingold failed to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and the GOP expanded its majorities in the state Assembly and Senate.

Kennedy is a former president of the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin. He says the party needs to do things “radically differently” and county parties should operate more like union locals, making decisions but looking to the state party for guidance.

Dane County Democratic Chairman Michael Basford was pondering a run as well but said Tuesday he had decided against it.
