The Washington Capitals announced that forwards Paul Carey and Liam O’Brien have been re-assigned to the Hershey Bears in the AHL.
O’Brien participated in the Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, while Carey was a healthy scratch. The game was the 22-year-old O’Brien’s 2016-17 NHL season debut and his first NHL game since Nov. 24, 2014.
O’Brien was initially brought up to provide the Capitals with forward depth as they headed on a two-game road trip in Canada. But following a 1-0 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, both forwards T.J. Oshie and Tom Wilson did not participate in Sunday’s morning skate. As a result, the Capitals were left with just 11 forwards, and Carey was recalled for the second time this season and O’Brien was thrust into the lineup.
Wilson was able to participate in the Montreal game, while Oshie was held out. The re-assignment of both forwards to Hershey is a good sign as far as Oshie’s recovery is concerned.
The Capitals were given the day off Tuesday. They will face the Pittsburgh Penguins at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
