SAN DIEGO (AP) - A bystander and lifeguards were able to save a woman who was swept off a reef near San Diego.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2k7r6Dm ) that a bystander called 911 Wednesday to report hearing the screams of a woman struggling in the water off Coast Walk Trail near La Jolla Cove. Another witness jumped into the water to help keep the woman afloat until lifeguards arrived.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Monica Munoz says the 30-year-old woman did not know how to swim and was having trouble breathing once rescuers got to her in the water.

The woman was brought to shore and lifeguards administered CPR. She recovered her breath and was later hospitalized.

A lifeguard who gave the woman CPR suffered a broken finger.
