SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California’s new attorney general is seeking re-election next year as lawmakers and Gov. Jerry Brown look to the state’s top law enforcement official as a shield against some Trump administration policies.
Xavier Becerra (HAHV’-ee-ayr BUH’-cehr-uh) made his re-election bid official on Thursday, less than a month after taking over the office.
Becerra, of Los Angeles, promised to defend California’s “forward-leaning” values against what he called the president’s “unconstitutional and un-American executive orders that shouldn’t see the light of day.”
He noted his parents, who immigrated from Mexico, once faced discrimination that he vowed to combat.
Brown appointed Becerra to complete the term of fellow Democrat Kamala Harris after she was elected to the U.S. Senate.
He previously told state lawmakers he intended to run for a full term in 2018.
