DETROIT (AP) - Mayor Mike Duggan has launched Detroit’s annual effort to find summer employment for teens and young adults.

Duggan challenged businesses and foundations Wednesday to take part in the Grow Detroit’s Young Talent program. The city hopes to provide 8,000 jobs for residents between 14 and 24 years of age.

This year, it also will provide opportunities for youth to receive industry-recognized certifications and expanded vocational training.

Duggan said the program “is all about preparing … young Detroiters for their first jobs and ultimately their careers.”

Banks, utilities, a number of foundations and various funds sponsored the program in 2016. The city hopes to raise more than $10 million this year.

About 8,100 jobs were created last summer and 5,600 in 2015.
